Editorial Reviews

This anthology includes an informative selection of sermons, letters, personal writings, and doctrinal treatises from various periods of Edwards's life. His writing is distinguished by felicity of language and sharpness of images. Edwards is important for the study of eighteenth-century American culture and history as well as religion. Highly recommended.--Library Journal

Selections are representative of both the public and the private Edwards. Letters, diary entries, and other personal documents give readers a nuanced introduction to Edwards and his time as well as an accessible entrée to the whole body of his work.--Booklist

[The editors] bring to this volume a rare knowledge of the full range of Edwards's writings, many of which have not yet been published. In seeking to 'reflect substantially the whole Edwards, public and personal, ' they have included not only many well-known printed sermons and treatises but also autobiographical writings, letters, and family papers.--American Literature

The most comprehensive one-volume Edwards anthology ever assembled. Deals with subjects not reflected in other collections, and contains selections from previously unpublished works.--Gerald R. McDermott, Religious Studies Review

"This new edited collection of the works of Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) is the most important recent addition to the continued study of American Puritanism. It is the first significant effort in decades to provide scholars with a workable cross-section of Edwards' written work. It is a sampling of a Yale University Press multivolume collection which, upon completion, will be the definitive and comprehensive Edwards collection. . . . Lest one be tempted to dismiss this collection as relevant only to the intellectual historian or student of philosophy, it is important to note that Edwards' work speaks to many contemporary concerns."--Glenn A. Moots, Northwood University, The University Bookman

"This anthology provides a wonderful synopsis of his life and thought. This affordable paperback edition of an earlier Yale University Press publication provides not only an accessible introduction to Edwards' best known works, but also affords glimpses of his personality and character through his diary and personal correspondence."--The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology

"This new anthology of writings by Jonathan Edwards offers a rich and judicious selection of Edwards's most important contributions to American intellectual history. It is clearly the finest collection of Edwards's works ever assembled in one volume."--Allen C. Guelzo, Harvard University

John E. Smith, Harry S. Stout, and
Kenneth P. Minkema are editors of the multivolume series
The Works of Jonathan Edwards, published by Yale University Press.
