Nourishment for the Spiritual Pilgrimage: Daily Devotions for Christian Disciples

Paperback |English |1498237096 | 9781498237093
Overview

""In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed"" (Mark 1:35). Jesus taught by his words and actions. He went by himself to pray when he was tired, when faced with upcoming trying events, or when he just wanted to be alone in the presence of his Lord. He gave us guidance about what to pray, how to pray, and why to pray, and was very familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures. Thus, if we want to become Jesus' disciple we should follow his model and invest time and emotional energy into prayer, Bible study, and reflection. Nourishment For The Spiritual Pilgrimage provides an aid for those who want to participate in the spiritual pilgrimage of becoming a lifelong disciple of Jesus Christ. It offers insight and support for those who daily want to turn their hearts, souls, and minds to God's will in their lives, as they strive to help in bringing about God's kingdom in this present time. There are countless other devotionals, but hopefully this can offer something that many of the others may not, a specific focus on the concept of discipleship. ""Vernon Jones provides a unique devotional resource designed to enable its users to become more fully-developed, life-long disciples of Jesus. He is a mature and experienced disciple who invites others into spiritual discipline by opening his own life of faith. Replete with specific suggestions that are realistic and encouraging, the book will be an excellent resource for people beginning their spiritual pilgrimage as disciples, as well as for veteran disciples."" --Walter F. Taylor Jr., PhD, Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio ""In Nourishment for the Spiritual Pilgrimage, Jones gives us practical and personal guidance for growing as a disciple. From the depth of his own experiences and reflection upon Scripture, he gives us daily handles on connecting with God, knowing and doing the will of God, and becoming an effective witness for Jesus."" --Jim Stuck, Bishop Emeritus, Indiana-Kentucky Synod, ELCA ""Jones's travelogue of the spiritual pilgrimage toward discipleship quickly becomes a trusted guidebook for our own journey. Touching on the pilgrimage's major themes--repentance, prayer, the Holy Spirit, discernment, hope, trust, and discipleship--this daily devotional keeps before us that ours is not a solitary journey by helping us recall the treasured 'cloud of witnesses' that surrounds and supports us. In fact, Jones becomes such a companion himself."" --Craig Alan Satterlee, PhD, Bishop, North West Lower Michigan Synod ELCA Vernon T. Jones, after a lengthy insurance industry career, earned his Master of Theological Studies Degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary. His business world experience combined with his theological insight and personal spiritual pilgrimage has enabled him to assist people with incorporating the discipleship practices in this book into their faith journey. He is also the author of Discipleship--A Lifelong Spiritual Pilgrimage (2013).
