Can Asians Think?

Overview
"Can Asians Think?" has been mentioned in an Economist (July 25th, 1998) essay entitled "What would Confucius say now?" In the essay, Kishore Mahbubani is cited several times as a key participant in the Asian values debate. The article also noted that Mahbubani had given the following description of Asian values: "Attachment to the family as an institution, deference to societal interests, thrift, conversatism in 'social mores, respect for authority'." The book was also reviewed by Dick Wilson in the Far Eastern Economic Review (September 17th, 1998). He notes that "Mahbubani goes on to deliver some brilliant political analysis, proving that he, at least, can think". He adds that the book " ... tip-toes its way through the minefield of Asian values, delivering high-flown praise for the Asean which Mahbubani himself helped consolidate, and offering insightful predictions about Sino-Japanese relations and East Asian power balance. But at the heart of the book is the Asia-West interconnection." Dick Wilson also notes that "(Mahbubani) attributes East Asian dynamics not only to the perceptible renaissance of rich ancient culture but also to a successful fusion of Eastern and Western features. Singapore is a prime example". Dick Wilson concludes by noting that "Kishore Mahbubani is well-placed to articular the Asian view in a way that Westerners will find persuasive. His ancestors were Indian, he is a citizen of a country the majority of whose inhabitants are Chinese but live under institutions partially British in their origin, and he has spent several years in North American universities and embassies." Dick Wilson also reviewed the book in another journal, the Euro-Japanese Journal (Winter 1999) Vol V No. 2, and made similar points. On September 7th, 1998, Kishore Mahbubani was also interviewed by CNN International on Riz Khan's Q&A; show. Following the show, Kishore Mahbubani received several e-mail messages, which included the following comments: "I saw you on CNN's Q&A; on Monday night. I was impressed by your performance - congratulations. So much so that I was stimulated to read your book." "At long last we have an Asian intellectual in your person who stands up for his continent by writing the kind of book which should have seen the light decades ago."The book has received one unfavourable review in a column entitled "Singaporean's Thinking Is on the Asia-Centric Side" by Jim Mann in the Los Angeles Times of 3 March 1999. --What People Are Saying About This Book"He is the most forceful, combative and insightful spokesman for the new Asia. The region's current difficulties do not lesson the long-term validity of his message." --Owen Harries, editor, The National InterestKishore Mahbubani's essays have always been among the most thoughtful and provocative distillations. They are invaluable in considering foreign policy, relations among civilizations and the panoply of issues called Asian values. In prose both sine wy and attractive, he has the great acility of making ideas come to life and setting them against each other as actors in an intellectual drama. Simply essential reading. --Greg Sheridan, foreign editor, The Australian--This text refers to an alternatePaperbackedition.
