This 61-day devotional uses military terms as focus concepts to communicate Biblical truth in a connective and accessible way. The final 9 devotional days focus on the transition from deployment to home. The appendix also includes useful prayers for chaplains in the field, or others interested in that type of ministry. Written by Col. James Fogle-Miller, FLARNG (Ret), a career military chaplain with Special Forces experience, it guides the reader to connect Biblical truth with the unique challenges of the military experience.

Chaplain Fogle-Miller is an army brat who, like many with similar experiences, has no one place to call home. Becoming an Army National Guard Chaplain in 1986 put him in a familiar uniform among people who felt like home. He felt richly blessed by the experience. Chaplain Fogle-Miller retired effective 31 May 2012 after a final mobilization tour as the I Corps (Rear) (Provisional) at Joint Base Lewis- McChord. He was attached to 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne). Though still a "Leg", he survived annual training in July (including heli-casting). That was quickly followed by a month-long deployment to south Florida for Operation Andrew. Three weeks after returning home he was sent, at age 42, to the Airborne Course, which he successfully completed. After four years with the Special Operations community, the chaplain served for over 6 years as the deputy brigade chaplain in the 53rd Infantry Brigade (Separate). He served with the 32d AAMDC in Kuwait and Iraq during OIF1 and deployed to Afghanistan in 2005 as the senior chaplain with the 53rd Infantry Brigade's Task Force Phoenix, after which he became the JFHQ State Chaplain for the Florida National Guard. He still sees large open fields drop zones. Clear, blue-skied days with little wind bring the thought, "This would be a good day for a jump." In the civilian world, the author and his wife, Beth, are both United Methodis clergypersons. She currently serves as the Director of Connectional Ministries (sort of like a Chief of Staff) for the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. Chaplain Fogle-Miller retired not only from the military, but also as a pastor. He stays busy working on the next chapter of his life. He and Beth have one child, a daughter named Carlene. The author is a 1972 graduate of the University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill. In 1978 he received both Master of Divinity and Master of Arts degrees from Duke University. He also earned a Ph.D. in Sociology of Religion from Emory University. Chaplain Fogle-Miller has received enough military awards that his Army Service Uniform looks respectable. He is pleased to enjoy the privilege of being able to wear either Honduran or Canadian jump wings.
